During the pandemic, I took an excellent Zoom watercolor portrait class with Rob Sherrill. I’ve never considered myself a watercolor painter, but I always loved the medium, and I had a lot of experience painting portraits in oil and encaustic, so I thought … “How hard can it be?”

Oh my. Watercolor is truly a master’s medium and the techniques require the exact opposite of oil paintings: watercolors are created from light to dark - and oil paintings are built from dark to light! That was a real challenge for me. And, if you make a major mistake in a watercolor, there’s not much you can do about it. You definitely can’t paint over it like you can in an oil painting. I enjoyed stretching my abilities and overcoming my initial frustration with the medium.
