The Edge of the World
The underlying imagery is taken from centuries-old map collections and scientific papers. Each represents a graphic understanding of the world as it was comprehended at the time.
The process of building each piece with layers of wax, scientific imagery and ink also echoes the way knowledge was (and is) accumulated and built upon – layer by layer.
Maps need to be “read”, to be interpreted and these pieces are intended to encourage the viewer to look past the obvious and question their assumptions between what is known and what is assumed; what is perceived and what is inferred; what is accurately rendered and what has been rendered from the imagination.
