The Final Proposition

Fragmented Memory Series

This series is based on a series of personal journal entries from over 30 years ago, and represent an attempt to create a visual representation of the events, emotions, and memories from that time.

The paintings are visual representation of the accretion and erosion of a life-time’s memories, complete with its complex layering of both remembered and forgotten events.

Our memories are defined by our perceptions, desires, fears, hopes and the passage of time – often creating a remembrance that is not based on factual happenings, but rather the emotional sensations that the event provoked.   Some memories are actively forgotten; others fade with time – creating holes in the fabric of our internal history.

Encaustic is as malleable as our memories, and the fused/melted layers of color, collaged text, shapes, line and structure in these pieces mirror the accretion and erosion of our memories as experiences are remembered, forgotten, re-created and encapsulated.

Encaustic paint, paper, scraps of books, wax crayon, and twisted thread combine to create the imagery.
